  • Statement from UVS on the dissolution of the Marian Franciscans

Statement from UVS on the dissolution of the Marian Franciscans

We, the committee of UVS on behalf of our members, would like to express our deep sadness that the Marian Franciscans are being made to leave Scotland. They were an incredible force for the traditional Catholic faith in Dundee, building on the parish of the Sacred Heart TLM community established by Bishop Robson so that it doubled if not tripled in size in the four years in which the Friars and Sisters were in residence here. The members of this parish are particularly saddened by this latest development as they had been assured that the Friars and Sisters would be allowed to stay at least until the end of October 2026.

Bishop Andrew Mackenzie has confirmed that going forward he will provide a diocesan priest to offer the Traditional Latin Mass on a Sunday afternoon at Lawside Convent from Sunday 21st June, 2026, as can be seen in the statement by the Diocese of Dunkeld on their website https://www.dunkelddiocese.co.uk/statement-from-the-diocese-of-dunkeld/

We would refer members to the Marian Franciscans’ statement on their dissolution in their press release and q&a. We would also refer members to the following article on the Catholic Unscripted blog https://www.catholicunscripted.com/p/the-end-of-the-marian-franciscans and the statement by Dr Joseph Shaw of the LMS.

We are deeply grateful to the Marian Franciscans for their work for the salvation of souls in Scotland in particular through the provision of the traditional sacraments and the promotion of Marian devotion. Many of us know personally at least one person brought to the faith or brought back to the faith through their ministry and prayers. They were an oasis in the desert and will be sorely missed.

    Annual General Meeting 2023

    Annual General Meeting 2023

Our AGM took place on Saturday 9th December at St Andrew’s Church, Ravelston in Edinburgh.

The day began with a Solemn Requiem Mass celebrated for our deceased members and benefactors by Fr Brendan Gerard FSSP.  Fr John Emerson FSSP was deacon and Fr Pio Idowu FFI subdeacon.

A buffet lunch followed in the parish rooms and the meeting was called to order at 1pm.  Fr Emerson led the meeting in prayer then, after presenting my report, the following changes were made to the committee:

Mr Thomas THOMSON resigned as Treasurer

Mr Fraser PEARCE resigned from the committee

Mr Benjamin PORTELLI was elected Treasurer

Miss Madeleine THURROTT was elected Secretary

In addition, Mr Liam COYLE continues on the committee approved by the meeting.

Afterwards Tommy Thomson, Dorothy McLean and Liam Coyle addressed the meeting before the business was concluded and Fr Emerson led the closing prayer.

I would like to thank the FSSP and the Marian Franciscans; our singers, servers and helpers; the Parish and Archdiocese for their hospitality and all those who attended the meeting for coming out despite the weather.

Finally my thanks to Tommy and Fraser for their hard work and commitment over the years (in Tommy’s case over the decades) and I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing them all the best.  Also congratulations to Madeleine and Benjamin as they take up their new roles.

With the committee reorganised we look forward to presenting our programme for the year ahead and I ask you to keep us and Una Voce Scotland in your prayers.

  • Frederick Stone, RIP

    Frederick Stone, RIP

It is with much sadness that I make the following announcement.  Mr Frederick Stone, former chairman of Una Voce Scotland, died yesterday evening, 12th October, in the aftermath of a stroke.  Fred was serving on our committee up until his death and his contribution to UVS and the traditional movement in general cannot be overstated.  It is a contribution which spans decades and he will be sorely missed by not only myself and the committee but by a great many who knew his qualities both home and abroad.  A full obituary will follow in due course as will details of his funeral.  Of your charity, do pray for the repose of his soul.

    Requiescat in pace.

    Euan Fairholm
    Chairman

  • A new Chairman for Una Voce Scotland

A new Chairman for Una Voce Scotland

At the AGM on the 19th of November 2022, members in attendance elected Euan Fairholm as the new Chairman of Una Voce Scotland. After the arrival of  their third child, Fraser and Jane have decided to step down from their posts in order to focus on home education and family life. Euan has served for the FSSP in Edinburgh for many years in addition to being a faithful member and MC for Una Voce Scotland.  Please pray for Euan as he continues to serve Our Lord and the Church in his new role. In support of Euan, the rest of the committee remains unchanged.

We were blessed to welcome the Fransiscans of the Immaculate who have recently taken up residence in Lawside Convent, Dundee. It was uplifting to hear of their apostolate with the Sacred Heart Latin Mass Community as part of the annual chairman’s report given by Fraser. Fr Emerson FSSP presented them with a beautiful monstrance.

The AGM took place after a Sung Requiem Mass for deceased members which was offered by Father Liam O’Connor with the permission of Bishop Toal.

    Synodal Process: Official UVS Response

“The only really effective apologia for Christianity comes down to two arguments, namely the saints the Church has produced and the art which has grown in her womb.” – Joseph Ratzinger

As sanctity comes about through the transformation which takes place in souls by their encounter with God in the sacred liturgy, where the ascended Incarnate God reaches down to ‘assume’ His Bride, the Mystical Body, so that she may share in His divinity, it is natural that many Latin-rite Catholics should wish to ground their ‘theologia prima’ in Western Christianity’s ancient liturgical tradition and avail themselves of the accumulated wisdom of a rite which stretches back through the whole of Christian history, through St Gregory the Great, to the apostles.

One of the many features of the Old Rite which make it a source of spiritual nourishment for the baptized is its continual emphasis on the Trinitarian reality of God.  The following prayer from the end of the Offertory provides just one example of this:

Receive, O Holy Trinity, this offering which we offer you in memory of the passion, resurrection, and ascension of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, and in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary, of Saint John the Baptist, of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and of all the Saints. May it bring honour to them and salvation to us. And may they intercede in heaven for us who keep their memory on earth. We pray this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

It is worth noting that the explicit Trinitarian focus – which continually reminds the believer that God is Love and that, through the Incarnation, death and Resurrection of God the Son, we are enabled to participate in this communion of Love – found throughout the traditional Roman Mass is shared with other ancient Eucharistic rites such as the Byzantine Divine Liturgy.

Another of the many features of the old rite attractive to many Catholics is its strong emphasis on the doctrine of the Real Presence, expressed and communicated as much through ritualistic gesture as in the prayers themselves.  Many see this as an antidote to the widespread ignorance and disbelief in this doctrine, one of the greatest tragedies of modern times. Likewise, a  2019 survey revealed that the dissent on moral teachings such as the immorality of contraception and abortion so widespread in the Church is almost entirely absent amongst those attached to the traditional Mass.

In modern times – and especially since the Second Vatican Council – it has been the constant concern of the Popes to counter the self-destructive materialism prevalent in the ‘developed’ world with a rediscovery of authentic Christian humanism.  The ancient rite’s indispensable and formative influence on Western civilization has been testified to by the international petition of 1966, which included Catholics and non-Catholics alike.  Many Catholics, especially the young, who desire to create such a Christian culture in the contemporary world are drawn to the liturgical tradition which gave birth to Christian civilization, something it can continue to do only if it remains an everyday part of the Church’s life.

Lastly, a ‘received’ liturgical tradition is a shared characteristic of all the separated churches of Apostolic origin.  In seeking the reunion of those churches with the Mother Church, the ancient rite stands as a living testimony to our shared Apostolic heritage and a source of hope for future Christian unity.

Filled with love for our Lord and His Church and animated by zeal for the salvation and sanctification of souls , we the committee of Una Voce Scotland humbly request that  during the 2023 Synod on Synodality the Bishops of Scotland present our call for the sacred liturgy according to the Usus Antiquior to be fully restored to the life of the Church.

With our filial devotion and prayers,

    Una Voce Scotland

  • A call to arms: Rosary Campaign

A call to arms: Rosary Campaign

We are in battle. If you’re not, you should be. Battle against principalities and powers who seek above all, our spiritual ruin. This is the reality of the spiritual life but in these days, the battle for the faith passed down in Sacred Tradition is under fire from the fiery darts of the enemy. In recent days we have called upon members to take action by participating in the Synodal process and by signing the preservethelatinmass.org petition. While taking action is vital, it is prayer that can move mountains. It is prayer that will move hearts. It is through prayer that God does the impossible.

We propose that members and friends redouble their commitment to their daily rosary as requested by Our Lady of Fatima and request that you add a powerful prayer to St Joseph.

The outward celebration of the Holy Year of St Joseph Patron of the Universal Church is being undermined by the savage attacks on the faith and the faithful from the enemies of God, those who should be following his example as head of the Holy Family.  In contrast, by a devout interior devotion, we trust that St Joseph, head of the Holy Family and terror of demons will ward off the wolves that have entered the temple of God and bring about the conversion of those pitiful souls who have been lured into the service of the enemy. We also suggest adding the St Michael Prayer with the intention of the protection of Sacred Tradition.

This Prayer to the Patron of the Universal Church was prescribed by His Holiness Pope Leo XIII to be recited after the daily Rosary during October, month of the Holy Rosary.

We call on all our members and friends to faithfully recite this prayer after their daily rosary.

    After praying the rosary

    Let us pray:

To thee, O blessed Joseph, we have recourse in our affliction, and having implored the help of thy thrice holy Spouse, we now, with hearts filled with confidence, earnestly beg thee also to take us under thy protection. By that charity wherewith thou wert united to the Immaculate Virgin Mother of God, and by that fatherly love with which thou didst cherish the Child Jesus, we beseech thee and we humbly pray that thou wilt look down with gracious eye upon that inheritance which Jesus Christ purchased by His blood, and wilt succor us in our need by thy power and strength.

Defend, O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family, the chosen off-spring of Jesus Christ. Keep from us, O most loving Father, all blight of error and corruption. Aid us from on high, most valiant defender, in this conflict with the powers of darkness. And even as of old thou didst rescue the Child Jesus from the peril of His life, so now defend God’s Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity. Shield us ever under thy patronage, that, following thine example and strengthened by thy help, we may live a holy life, die a happy death, and attain to everlasting bliss in Heaven. Amen.

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen
